Hans-Leo Teulings

Hans-Leo Teulings received a Masters in Experimental Physics and Biophysics in 1975 and a PhD in Experimental Psychology in 1988 from the University of Nijmegen (Radboud University) in The Netherlands. From 1976 to 1993, he conducted research on the motor-control aspects of handwriting in children and adults and on automatic online handwriting recognition at the Nijmegen Institute for Cognition and Information (NICI) together with Profs. Thomassen and Van Galen and in several European Research projects. From 1993 to 1997, he investigated the effects of aging and Parkinson's disease upon handwriting movements at the Motor Control Laboratory, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, USA with Prof. Stelmach. In June 1997, he co-founded NeuroScript. NeuroScript is an independent research and development organization, funded by the National Institutes of Health. At NeuroScript, he leads the design, development, and testing of handwriting and fine-motor control analysis software and hardware for measuring, recording, processing, summarizing large databases, and analyzing. His goal is to develop a human movement-analysis system that is applicable in health care (psychiatry, neurology) and in education (handwriting instruction to primary-school children). Current projects include a handwriting-based system for psychiatrists to monitor extrapyramidal movement side effects due to schizophrenia medication. He has been involved with IGS since the very first beginning. In 1982, he co-organized with Prof. Dr. Thomassen the first International Graphonomics Society (IGS) conference. In 2003, he organized the 11th IGS conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA together with Dr. Van Gemmert. Since 2005, he iserves as secretary of the IGS.

Application software to assist psychiatrists in handwriting movement analysis to detect side effects in due to antipsychotic drugs. Application software to assist teachers in handwriting education.
